Often people say the funniest things to me when I say do sports massage, or I’m a soft tissue therapist. There is a lot of misconception attached to the therapy I provide and I wanted to try and dispell some of the myths around sports massage.
You need to be sporty to get a sports massage
Simply not true! Yes, there are fantastic benefits for the sporty types, but the benefits don’t just stop there. Sports massage or soft tissue therapy is effective for all - young, old, active and not so active! In my clinic, my focus is identifying what the problem is, and treating to help you get back to pain free living. The therapy helps people with sporting injuries through to people struggling with their shoulders from sitting at a desk all day or stress along with lots of other conditions.
Sports massage is a brutal and painful experience
I have to admit, I once thought this was what a good sports massage should be. I used to go and get a massage, and would be left covered in bruises! Thankfully sports massage has gone through a lot of changes in recent years. The techniques I use work effectively within your pain range, focusing on the soft tissue (the muscles!) of the body. These advanced techniques are scientifically grounded and often used by in other professions like osteopathy and chiropractic.
I’m proudly associated with the Sports Massage Association (SMA), and they are keen to shake off the dark past of sports massage. By calling ourselves Soft Tissue Therapists, it more accurately reflects what we specialise in - the soft tissues of the body! There is no table of pain in my clinic!
Isn’t massage all about scented candles and whale music?
Possibly, but certainly not in the massage I provide! Though you will feel relaxed, I don’t simply get you to lay face down on the massage couch. Depending on the problem, I will get you to move around - you could be seated, laying on your front/back or even laying on your side. I will talk you through everything I’m going to do beforehand - ensuring you are comfortable at all times. There are no candles I’m afraid, and though I do like whales, I prefer to have the radio on in the background, not whale music!
